NAREGNO: an oasis of tranquility ... full of services!
NAREGNO is a delightful bay with a beautiful crystalline sea, surrounded by two pine forests and dominated by two ancient Spanish fortresses: Forte Longone, just above the village of Porto Azzurro, and Forte Focardo, built in 1678.
This bay is just 3 km from the villages of Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro and is considered by the usual visitors a quiet corner, able to offer many services: paid parking, hotels, apartments and residences, restaurants and bars on the beach, pedal boat rental and canoes , bathing establishments, diving school and even a free shuttle service to / from Capoliveri. Its clear sea makes it an excellent point for snorkelling. Oriented to the south east, Naregno often reminds its guests that "the continent" is not so far as it is possible to see the Tuscan coast from Follonica to Punta Ala.
Here tourism began in the 50s when Ottorino Bartolini, son of one of the historic Capolivese families, returned to the Island of Elba after a period of imprisonment in India. The whole island appeared devastated after the war, the occupation and the bombings. In an already difficult period, Ottorino had inherited several lands from his parents, but it was unthinkable to allocate them to agriculture (as many did) because they were too far from the village and too close to the sea.
What to do then? Ottorino, with great talent and a lot of courage, decided to try to "share" with other people the beauty of these places, opening with his sister the Pension Le Acacie. At the beginning it was all very hard, just think that here too the light was missing: you could use a wind generator called "the tadpole" that was placed at the top of the hill. When it blew, it produced electricity and when it was not windy, it was lit by candlelight. Another problem was the supply of water. Ottorino Bartolini, however, thanks to his experience and determination, he studied the land, he understood that there was water in the subsoil and dug the artesian wells from which still today gushes a lot of high quality water that is used by HOTEL & RESIDENCE LE ACACIE .
At the time, then, there were no streets today, but only a few mule tracks. Tourists, as in the historical photos of the Bartolini Family, initially arrived with a boat from Porto Azzurro, as well as purchases made for retirement ... the road was built later. The place liked a lot, especially to the first German foreign tourists who also loved scuba diving, but Ottorino did not stop: made contact with the tourist agencies also English, who brought guests by plane to Pisa and then took them to Elba in coaches. From true forerunners, the ACACIE owners also realized that only the sea was not enough, but it served to offer more its own guests and so the structure was opened with a tennis court, a large swimming pool and organized excursions, parties and dances.
